Shōtōkan Connect is pleased to host the upcoming Performance and Referees & Judges Course, bringing together both Competitors and Officials in a shared development environment.
Performance and Competition coaching sessions, led by Sensei Ian Willis 7 Dan and Sensei Ian Harman 6 Dan, will focus on developing Kumite and Kata skills, providing valuable pre-competition preparation ahead of the Shōtōkan Connect Championship in October.
Running alongside, is the Referees & Judges Continuous Development Course, delivered by Sensei Frank Veselovsky 5 Dan, it will cover the structure and operation of a Karate tournament, including the roles of Referees, Judges, Trainee Officials, Stewards, Recorders, Announcers, Timekeepers, and Coaches.
Participation is encouraged for all members, supporting better understanding between competitors and officials, and promoting consistent standards across the organisation. This course also offers a clear pathway into officiating and tournament management, strengthening the overall quality and professionalism of Shōtōkan Connect events.

09:30 - 10:00: Registration
10:00 - 11:30: Kumite training and Referees & Judges, Coaches theory on Kumite
11:30 - 12:30: Kumite practice on 3 areas with Referees & Judges and Coaches
12:30 - 14:00: Kata training and Referees & Judges, Coaches theory on Kata
14:00 - 15:00: Kata practice on 3 areas with Referees & Judges and Coaches
15:00 - 15:30: Discussion / End of Course
For those wishing to attend the Referees & Judges Continuous Development Courses, this is run at the same time as the Kumite and Kata sessions, attendees can't attend both.
Referees & Judges Continuous Development Courses attendees will need to wear official uniform as set out in the Shōtōkan Connect Tournament Rules. This is comprised of:
- A navy-blue blazer (where possible)
- A Shōtōkan Connect badge (if available)
- A white shirt
- A Shōtōkan Connect tie (if available)
- Grey trousers
- Black socks covering 2/3rd of the shin
- Black, soft sole shoes (thin, low tread)
As part of our efforts, to maintain the quality and cleanliness of our tatami, we kindly request that, all Referees & Judges CDC attendees wear a black, soft sole shoes (thin, low tread). Please note that these shoes are to be worn exclusively indoors, and should never be worn outdoors. This is essential to prevent any potential damage to the tatami surface. Alternatively you may go barefoot whilst on the tatami.
Please note that the Referees & Judges CDC portion of this event does not count towards the three course requirement for Karateka that have joined from another association and are looking to ratify their 3rd DAN or above grading qualification.
